Some of my dearest friends and I, who make up the Four Corners vocal jazz quartet, are going into the recording studio this month to record for our debut album! Before coming to college I had no idea what vocal jazz was. Not before long was I introduced to the music of the New York Voices; and I've been hooked ever since. Darmon Meader, the leader of the group, is a great inspiration to me. His arranging, improvising, and versatility as a jazz musician is quite spectacular. And since becoming personally acquainted with the group in fall of 2010, I've admired the fact that Darmon, Peter, Kim, and Lauren are all really genuine and giving people. Just recently, the New York Voices came to do a concert with WMU's Gold Company and Jazz Orchestra, the first time performing at WMU since their very first tour back in the early 90's. The picture above is one I took of the feature concert in Miller Auditorium. I've also spent a good amount of time studying their music; learning the arrangements and transcribing solos. A few of Kim's and Darmon's solos are available for download here. The voices also hold a great camp (which I've attended) at BGSU every summer. Check it out if you're interested!
